About this deal

Telesnaps,’ still images of the action taken as the episode went out, exist for The Abominable Snowmen. The story may be a little plodding in places, but the chemistry between Patrick Troughton, Frazer Hines and Deborah Watling is undeniable, the Yeti are lots of fun, the Great Intelligence very creepy and this animation is a more-than-welcome addition to any fans’ collection. The cover art and special features of the animated version of the missing Doctor Who adventure, releasing on DVD, Blu-Ray and Steelbook on 5th September 2022, have been revealed. A freelance journalist and Doctor Who fanzine editor since 1978, Tim Robins has written on comics, films, books and TV programmes for a wide range of publications including Starburst, Interzone, Primetime and TV Guide. This includes, without limitation, direct loss, loss of business or profits (whether or not the loss of such profits was foreseeable, arose in the normal course of things or you have advised this Company of the possibility of such potential loss), damage caused to your computer, computer software, systems and programs and the data thereon or any other direct or indirect, consequential and incidental damages.

The Abominable Snowmen benefits from sincere performances from the cast and chillingly evil work from Wolfe Morris, as the voice of Master Padmasambhava, whose appearence resembles a cross between EC horror’s crypt keeper and the internet meme Wojak aka ‘the feels guy’. Since 1990 he worked at the University of Glamorgan where he was a Senior Lecturer in Cultural and Media Studies and the social sciences. However, audio-only recordings of all the episodes have survived and have been used here to create six brand new fully animated presentations of this lost classic, alongside the one surviving segment, Episode Two. The greatest issue is undoubtedly the pacing: it’s a fairly formulaic tale, featuring quite a bit of back-and-forth, with some slow and plodding dialogue scenes. We’re grateful for the surviving audio-only recordings, which we are very lucky to have courtesy of several Doctor Who fans, which have allowed us to create another exciting and action-packed chapter in the Doctor’s story.

My copy is fine and I don’t think I’ve seen anybody else complain about it so I think it’s either your disc or possibly your player needing an firmware update (if it does updates) . So the new release will very likely include a new reconstruction, using those still images alongside the soundtrack, too.The Doctor Who Site also participates in various other affiliate marketing programs, which means we may get paid commission on products purchased through our links. It’s difficult not to wonder if the full story – albeit in animated form – can hold up to its reputation, strengthened by its one surviving episode, an action figure set and an atmospheric Target novelisation by the late, great Terrance Dicks.

Doctor Who: The Abominable Snowmen is a six-part story based on audio recordings of the original episodes.

Bonus Features: As well as an alternative colour version of the animation, telesnaps of all episodes and commentaries by cast and fans, the three disk Blu-Ray comes with fun extras, including 8mm home movies shot by Frazer Hines and director Gerald Blake on location in Snowdonia. Jamie and Victoria meanwhile discover the true culprits – the previously peaceful Yeti that live in seclusion on the mountainside have apparently turned violent.
