About this deal

The Draw of the Sea will evoke both the specific and the universal appeal of the sea in the same way that James Rebanks evoked both the specific and the universal in The Shepherd’s Life: A Tale of the Lake District. Adam Farrer, author of Cold Fish Soup 'A beautiful, wise and charming book’ Charlie Carroll, author of The Lip 'Roger Deakin would have been proud to have written it himself.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. It's beautiful and thoughtfully human, a portrait of those lives that revolve around the swell of ocean and tide. Anyone who enjoys creative non-fiction and nature writing is sure to find much to enjoy in The Draw of the Sea. Rather, it is the tradition, largely Cornish, of scouring the beaches for objects of greater or lesser use that are brought in by storms and the great ocean currents. The Draw of the Sea is a meaningful and moving work into how we interact with the environment around us and how it comes to shape the course of our lives. With many of the things I find, like Jane’s mystery woven dolls, the meaning of the messages has been slightly obscured, a radio dial a few notches off from a clear signal. Menmuir’s evocation of our love-affair with the sea is a sublime work that stands as both a masterpiece of nature writing and a fearless exploration of the collective psyche contemplating its relationship with the Earth. And for those who live near the sea or, like me, have lived by the sea’s rhythms but are now landlocked and shoreless, it will hold even greater resonance.

My own love of the sea, and the Cornish coast in particular, is deepened by seeing it through the eyes of so many others. Finance is provided by PayPal Credit (a trading name of PayPal UK Ltd, Whittaker House, Whittaker Avenue, Richmond-Upon-Thames, Surrey, United Kingdom, TW9 1EH).

In this book, he travels around Cornwall and Scilly Isles and all the way up to Svalbard finding out the stories of the people who live and love the coast in the same way that he does. ooOooWith credit to Holly Ovenden, the dust-jacket has a touch of gold colouring that follows through to the titling on the spine, all nonchalantly glistening in the change of light.

It feeds us, sustaining communities and providing livelihoods, but it also holds immense destructive power which can take all those away in an instant. I also have always felt drawn to the sea and after reading this book I now understand that many people feel the same way and we all explore the sea in different ways and each have our own unique experiences from its presence.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough, it is just stunning and really brought out my emotions in an unexpected way.
