About this deal

I’ve reviewed more than a thousand different consumer electronics products including headphones, speakers, TVs, and every major game system and VR headset of the last decade. It still requires a somewhat hefty tap, but you can tap mostly anywhere on the speaker to get the response you want. Although, being able to mount it to a wall, which neither of the other speakers can do without clumsy accessories, adds a little more dimension to the otherwise tinny sound.

Previously, you could attach your phone to play a podcast through the Dot, or attach your Dot to a better sound system to give it Alexa’s skills. This new child-friendly tech can recognize when a younger person gives voice commands and tailors its reception accordingly. Home Retail Group Card Services Limited is registered in England (04007072) at 33 Holborn, London, United Kingdom, EC1N 2HT.

I set it to turn up the AC when it gets too warm in the kitchen, and it worked reliably without me having to ask Alexa to adjust the Ecobee thermostat while I toiled over a hot stove. But if I say “Alexa, what’s the temperature in this room” it chirps back “Bedroom doesn’t support that”. The last upgrade, according to the company, is to the sonics, with "clearer vocals, deeper bass and vibrant sound. A light ring runs around the flat base; it glows blue when you interact with Alexa and will focus a particularly bright point to indicate the direction from which it registered the voice command. The company claims it has completely redesigned the audio architecture to deliver two times the bass of the prior model.

One of the most remarkable things about the best smart speakers is their ability to discern what you're saying -- even if music is blaring and even when it's from another speaker altogether. At my own home, I use Google Assistant because I've found it responds better to Australian accents, but if I based my choice on sound quality alone, I'd pick Alexa. While it looks and sounds exactly the same as the Echo Dot, it’s a hefty upgrade when compared to the previous version. The Dot’s Alexa performance is first rate, with its four-microphone array being able to hear you over things like the cooker hood going full pelt in the kitchen or when playing music at maximum volume even if you do have to shout a bit. If you want something that displays all your family photos, can act as a bulletin board for messages, and play films and TV shows in the kitchen (if you’d rather this instead of a TV), it’s a great nifty device. The hockey-puck-shaped speaker has a more refined look thanks to the fabric finish - far better than the older all-plastic version.

It’s not the prettiest thing in the world – it looks like an iPad has been glued onto a swivelling Echo 4th gen base, but it works well, constantly tracking every movement we made. In other words, it’s a little impractical unless you happen to like the songs of the alternative 90s band ‘A’. Echo Dot + another Echo - Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms. With its high-tech sound features, including Dolby audio, you’ll be able to enjoy your favorite beats at the right volume. Your Wi-Fi network must use a compatible eero router and the Echo device must stay in range of a compatible eero device. When I think of the time before smart speakers, I wonder how I ever got out of bed to turn off a light. Still, with the Dot's new-and-improved front-firing speaker, there's no question that it wins the contest when it comes to quality audio. Simon specialises in testing the latest smart gadgets, home entertainment gear, headphones, speakers, charging kit and smartphones. It can also access Amp, Apple Music, Apple Podcasts, Deezer, iHeartRadio, Pandora, Saavn, SiriusXM, Spotify, Tidal, and TuneIn to play music, podcasts, and radio stations via those services. Even though the audio strength and quality of this device are lacking compared to its predecessors, it still provides great quality sound.

Furthermore, this device also provides functionality for the users through connecting to services and apps such as Twitter, Uber, and Spotify.A small change, but possibly a handy one if you keep one by the bedside or like to play music at aggressively high volumes. It now features a gloriously big dot matrix display, so we could read weather reports on the ticker-like display, as well as the title of songs, the answer to quick sums, exchange rates and the indoor temperature, as well as cute smiley faces. The weather forecast readout, with the temperature and a little cloud, sun, or rain icon, is more useful and slightly faster than listening to Alexa say the forecast. If you have a higher budget and your priority is sound quality when listening to music, we recommend choosing the more expensive EchoStudio model, but equipped with Dolby Atmos and Sony 360 Reality Audio. The fourth-gen and third-gen Dots have the audio jack, so you’re not out of luck if you want this feature.
