About this deal

This means that procedures reflect general practice and standards applicable at the time resources were produced and cannot be assumed to be acceptable today. Links to the National Curriculum specify the statutory requirements for primary schools in England that relate to the mathematical content of each chapter. This provides further practice for our students to be able to strengthen their subject knowledge, in preparation for teaching key areas of the National Curriculum. As part of my PGCE I purchased many books - this one being 1 of 3 that I actually use for my teaching.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. As well as his publications in the field of education, he has written seven books of Christian drama for young people and a Christmas musical (published by Church House/National Society). He has worked as a primary teacher and as a lecturer in primary teacher education for 18 years, following an earlier career in the IT industry. Worked examples of calculation methods are combined with useful insights into essential prior knowledge and understanding.

In the chapter ‘Written methods for Multiplication and Division’ the concepts behind the methods are explained clearly and thoroughly. Reduce the stress of studying maths and help your child with their homework, following this unique visual guide which will demystify the subject for everyone. I like to recommend this for this group to help them with mathematics pedagogy in training and beyond. Questions and quizzes: Achieve a firm grasp of concepts and a clear understanding with self-assessment questions and quizzes.

It is clear that this book is written by a teacher for teachers and its main objective is to ensure teachers understand the concepts behind what that they teach so that children will not just learn mathematics but understand mathematics.Haylock emphasises the importance of teaching written methods with understanding and one key strategy he exemplifies to achieve this is the use of representation. Haylock approached mathematical concepts in very approachable language and if it's not your strong point (like me), this is a great way of bettering your understanding. The book is written in the accessible and engaging style we have come to expect from Derek Haylock, and is informed by his wealth of experience. The self-assessment tasks and suggestions for further reading should ensure that teachers feel well prepared to teach the mathematics contained in the book. A group of friendly jungle animals gently guide them through each topic, and tricky concepts are broken into easy-to-follow steps to help build confidence.

QUESTIONS AND QUIZZES: Achieve a firm grasp of concepts and a clear understanding with self-assessment questions and quizzes. The teaching points throughout help to draw relevant links between theory and practice and the self-assessment questions focus on developing teachers’ own content and pedagogical content knowledge. There are good illustrations on the use of physical representations to support addition and subtraction with very clear guidance on how to use base ten materials and coins. The activities in this photocopiable book gives Key Stage 2 pupils all the tools they need to gain fluency in multiplication and division up to their 12 times tables. Join a cast of entertaining bugs as they explore maths through everyday examples, from handling numbers and times tables to weighing ingredients and telling the time.Reasoning and Problem-solving questions encourage you to use and apply mathematical concepts in solving mathematical puzzles or problems in real life situations. There is still a huge reliance in the book of using bare numbers to explain concepts and a lack of use of concrete resources or visuals to demonstrate conceptual understanding and how to teach these concepts effectively to children. He was a former founding member of the General Teaching Council for England and is engaged in supporting developing education projects in India. As a student teacher this book greatly helped me as I was not very confident with maths myself and aided me to be able to feel confident teaching methods to the children. This book can rightly be considered the ultimate reference for securing appropriate mathematics subject knowledge for primary teaching.
